Hazardous Substance Spill Response and Containment

A drum that ruptures or a tanker that leaks turns an ordinary day into an environmental and health emergency within minutes. This course prepares teams to respond to chemical, fuel and oil spills safely, from raising the alarm and protecting themselves to containing, absorbing and cleaning up the release. Practical exercises use spill kits and containment methods suited to workshops, fuel bays and storage yards across the region.

What you will be able to do

  • Assess a spill for its hazards before anyone approaches it.
  • Decide when to respond in-house and when to evacuate and call for help.
  • Select and use the correct protective equipment for the substance involved.
  • Contain, absorb and recover a spill using appropriate spill kit materials.
  • Protect drains, watercourses and soil from contamination.
  • Decontaminate the area, dispose of waste correctly and report the event.
