Basic Firefighting and Fire Extinguisher Skills for Workplace Teams

Most workplace fires start small and can be stopped in the first minutes if someone nearby knows what to do. This hands on course gives workers and marshals the confidence and skill to tackle incipient fires safely and to know when to stop and evacuate. Delegates practise using extinguishers and hose reels on the classes of fire found in African offices, workshops and warehouses.

What you will be able to do

  • Explain how fire starts, spreads and is classified by fuel type.
  • Select the correct extinguisher and agent for each class of fire.
  • Operate portable extinguishers and hose reels safely on incipient fires.
  • Judge when a fire is too large to fight and evacuation must begin.
  • Carry out simple pre incident checks on firefighting equipment.
  • Coordinate first response with evacuation and the professional fire service.
